Masculinity in A View From The Bridge by Arthur Miller Essay
Masculinity in A View From The Bridge by Arthur Miller Miller uses several forms of masculinity to show the audience that in different circumstances and cultures different forms of masculinity are possible. This is shown to us by comparing both extremes of masculinity and what they both involve. In the longshoreman culture respect is as much a part of a man as is his own image. This leads to those members of the community going to extraordinary lengths to keep their reputation in order to stop them being emasculated in the eyes of the community. In the Sicilian culture this is not so true and a form of masculinity that has certain feminine qualities is shown to us. His masculinity is of a similar style to that of Eddies, but differs in one fundamental way. Instead of Eddies obsession with his image in the community Marco is obsessed with honour and above all family honour. This can clearly be seen by the way he looks after his brother and family, spending his first money on medicine for [his] boy. When looking out for his brother, Rodolfo, more often than not he is stopping him from getting into trouble, Youll be quiet, Rodolfo, You come home early now. The problem with this style of masculinity that we are shown by Miller is that when it comes into contact with similar styles of masculinity it can cause friction in relationships between people. We can see this clearly in Marco and Eddies relationship. In the beginning Eddie admires Marco because hes a strong guy, but at the tension grows superficially Marco seems calm. This is particularly noticeable in the scene with the chair being lifted. Personal Narrative Go Banana Boating - 1030 Words
Never. Ever. Go Banana Boating. If someone offered to take you on a ride on a long, inflatable, cylinder in the middle of the ocean it might sound intriguing at first, but once you think about it, it is most likely not the best idea. Over summer break this year, we went on a huge group trip to Aruba. There were people from all over the country and we got to do big group activities every day. This particular day was a free day at the beach, where we could do whatever we wanted. There were boats you could ride- big and small. You could see people who looked like little ants in the distance as they parasailed. There were sandy, wet life jackets strewn everywhere. We watched people jet ski and bounce on water trampolines, people went tubingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The driver then pulled the boat directly next to the tube so that they were perfectly parallel and she hopped on the boat like nothing had happened. Of course this wasnââ¬â¢t the brightest idea, because as soon as he started to go, the tube jerked and everyone flew off of it. After struggling to get back on, everyone agreed to hold on and to not purposely fall off. This plan was going great until the driver shifted in front of a cruise ship, which was now heading towards us. It was pretty far off in the distance, so that if you went straight you most likely wouldnââ¬â¢t hit itâ⬠¦ but let s just say our driver must not have been very experienced, because he had other plans. Holding on for dear life, we swerved all over the place, hitting waves, and bouncing up and down. It was as if the once perfectly smooth blue waters salt had suddenly taken over burning everyoneââ¬â¢s eyes and skin. Someone must have given up on holding on, because we heard a faint voice from the ocean that sounded like a scream saying, ââ¬Å"WAITTTTTTTâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ , until we could no longer hear it over the boats engines and the screaming children back on the shore. All of us were too busy focusing on the body in the middle of the ocean, that we had not realized there was a huge wave coming directly at the side of our boat. Although most people do not see how this affects anything besides Job availability, immigration affects the education world more than most. Education in the United States has to adapt to its teaching strategies to accommodate all the new students, but sometimes some students are left behind. The argument between whether or not to keep bilingual schooling in America is never stopping. Some schools even have multilingual education now because they have more than two dominant languages at their schools. Bilingual education is education that incorporates different languages into the educational system to help all students. Districts believe that to help all students the schools need to accommodate to all their needs, even if it means everyone learning new things in a more advanced way. As D. Palmer, a research writer for the urban Review, states, Two-way Immersion promotes bilingualism, cross-cultural appreciation, and academic success (Palmer 392). This is what pushes most people to support bilingual/multilingual education. Bilingual education as well as multilingual education should be kept In the schools because it promotes higher standards and goals for the students, Improves teacher education and quality, and It put students on the track for cultural acceptance all around. Education has slowly been losing Its Influence on the ever changing nation, but with the new teaching strategies of bilingual education the standards are now raised and the students are expected to learn more. However with the bilingual educational approach students do not fall as far behind as they may have seemed to be. Thus the students realize they can gain those higher goals and reach the standards the nation had set for them. The students will then try harder and the nations educational system will slowly be catching back up to the world. By supporting tans type AT group learning communities Turner puss student expectation levels higher, this encourages students to do better. They can do more on their own, but also have the group to help push them as well, all the while helping education raise its influence back up in the world. Having these educational strategies also requires that teachers are more educated and thus have better teaching abilities for the students to learn from. The teachers would have to, depending on their district, learn more than one language ND learn new skills that would help the students learn the new information in an easy way. Teachers are not Just simply sent back to school though; the districts themselves decide how teachers are to be more educated. Once the teachers push themselves they will be better prepared to push their own students. This will lead the education system into the future and allow the students to have more confidence to do well. The students will be able to know the teachers are there for them and be able to rely on the teachers as they should be able to. With this system of education we will also prepare students for cultural acceptance all around. If the students learned that knowing more than one culture is good for the future then they will be more likely to accept a more diverse range of people as argued by Eugene Garcia (117). The nation has been trying to change the outlook on multiple cultures for years and if the nation start to incorporate multiple cultures into schools then the future generations will start to appreciate other cultures. Then the students of foreign parents, first or second generation, can feel more comfortable in school. The children will feel as though they are more able to do ell in school and be accepted. Most children feel as though they will be categorized or fall behind because they will have less attention from the district itself according to Joel Spring, a professional educational writer (133). If the students know that the district is there to help them they will be able to achieve more and set a good example for the nation as a whole.. There is constant struggle and debate over whether or not bilingual/multilingual education should exist in education.
